National Association of Area Agencies of Aging (N4A)is the umbrella organization for the 655 area agencies on aging (AAAs) and more than 230 Title VI Native American aging programs in the US. N4a advocates in Washington on behalf of the local aging agencies to ensure that needed resources and support services are available to older Americans. NICHE – Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders,a national geriatric nursing program, comprises more than 200 hospitals in more than 40 states and parts of Canada. A program of the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at New York University College of Nursing, the goal of NICHE is to achieve systematic nursing change that will benefit hospitalized older patients. NICHE is unlike other programs in that it does not prescribe how institutions should modify geriatric care; rather, it provides the materials and services necessary to stimulate and support the planning and implementation process. Its focus is on programs and protocols that are predominantly under the control of nursing practice.
POGOe –Portal of Geriatric Online Educationis an online clearinghouse for the dissemination of high-quality geriatric educational products. POGOe affords medical educators access a wide range of educational products to integrate geriatrics content into their teaching. Registration is required.
PubMedis a free on-line service of the US National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health that provides direct Web links between MEDLINE abstracts and the publishers of full-text articles. Included are more than 5000 journals in 37 languages with issues from 1950 to date.
The John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursingseeks to improve the health care of older adults through nursing. The Hartford Institute identifies and develops best practices in nursing care of older adults and infuses these practices into the education of every nursing student and the work environment of every practicing professional nurse. It is a searchable database, constantly updated and expanded, to highlight the latest research and data on the burden of chronic disease and the value of investing in medical research. The interactive database allows users to submit data from additional studies and report. Content is reviewed by the editorial board prior to posting.
The TRECS Instituteis a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding new and effective ways to better meet the needs of America’s elderly population. TRECS places recruitment, training, and retention of staff as a top priority in all organizational levels.
